Environmental Impact Studies in São Tomé and Príncipe
VGL staff researcher Claire Egan and postdoctoral scholar Alan Juache recently returned from a four-week fieldwork trip to São Tomé and Príncipe where they completed fieldwork for UCMI as part of ongoing environmental studies.
Alongside Edley Sousa, former UCMI Scholarship recipient and the current Head of the PNEP Entomology Team, they helped the field team in STP evaluate the potential environmental impacts of a modified mosquito on local habitats, predator-prey relationships, and the broader ecosystem. As part of this work, the team collected adult dragonflies and damselflies as well as bat fecal samples for further analysis and began conducting a series of experiments at the University of São Tomé and Príncipe to study Anopheles coluzzii drought tolerance.
