The Vector Genetics Laboratory (VGL) at UC Davis carries out research and training in the areas of population and molecular genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics of insect vectors of human and animal disease. We have developed a program aimed at expanding knowledge that may be applied to improving control of vectorborne diseases, and that addresses problems of interest in the field of evolutionary genetics. The laboratory is directed by Dr. Gregory C. Lanzaro in the Dept. of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology of the School of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Anthony Cornel in the Dept. of Entomology and Nematology at UC Davis.
The VGL has a history of hosting exemplary undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in biological/biomedical research. The lab offers students the opportunity to gain experience working in an active research laboratory, to participate as an author on papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and most importantly, to learn hands-on techniques used in cutting edge methods in molecular biology. We are committed to providing qualified undergraduate students an excellent research experience and we expect a similarly high level of commitment from our students.
We host an annual undergraduate research interest seminar for those who are interested in joining our lab for undergraduate research program. At the seminar you will learn the rules and responsibilities for research participation and be introduced to research activities currently being conducted at the Vector Genetics Laboratory.

The first step in applying for an Undergraduate Research Scholar position in the VGL is attendance at our interest seminar. Interest seminars are held only once each year. Attendance at this meeting is mandatory; applications will not be accepted from anyone who has failed to attend the interest seminar.

You will have the opportunity to meet all the senior scientists in the VGL as well as our current undergraduate students, hear presentations describing our current research, and learn about the achievements of our past students. Applications will be provided at the meeting to all interested students. Once you have submitted a complete application, you may be contacted to schedule an interview. Decisions will be made shortly after the application period closes and you will be notified at that time regarding your status.
