Duties include molecular laboratory work (DNA extractions, PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, NGS library preparation, MassArray multiplex assays, etc.) and basic laboratory maintenance such as re-stocking consumable lab supplies and cleaning re-useable supplies. The lab assistant will have the opportunity, if desired, to travel to field sites in São Tomé & Príncipe (west Africa) and, possibly, other sites in Africa to assist with Anopheles mosquito collections, processing, extraction, and laboratory setup.

Key Responsibilities

  • 90% - APPLIED RESEARCH
    • Conduct laboratory experiments performed on > 4000 samples year under BSL2 conditions, including DNA extraction and quantification and PCR.
    • DNA quality control via Qubit, Nanodrop, and Tapestation 4200.
    • Analyze extracted samples using a wide array of gel-based assays using both conventional gel electrophoresis rigs and e-gel rigs.
    • Assess DNA samples for quantity and quality using an Agilent Technologies TapeStation and genotyping using a MassArray instrument and the associated software to score individual genotypes; proof-reading chromatographs and entering data into a web-based database.
    • Preparation of libraries for whole genome sequencing, conducting quality control assays on these libraries and preparation of libraries for sequencing by the DNA core facility.
    • Enter and maintain data in online project databases and spreadsheets.
    • Assist with ongoing mosquito-based research projects involving mosquito rearing or non-target species.
    • Assist with organizing incoming samples from field sites to ensure they are labeled, sorted, and entered into the online database correctly
    • Communicate results and relevant updates in weekly lab meetings.
